For a gaming platform to be successful, it is absolutely crucial to be backed by the developing community. After all, what good is the best hardware if the best games aren’t available on it? A survey conducted by the organizers of this week’s Game Developers Conference, shines a light on which platforms developers are currently supporting and which ones are getting the second-rate treatment.
Unsurprisingly, the PC remains the frontrunner with respect to developer support. 52 percent of those surveyed are currently working on a game that will be released on PCs. Meanwhile mobile devices have established themselves as a viable gaming platform. Smartphones are particularly attractive to developers due to the huge audience that can potentially be reached. Virtual reality is quickly emerging as a gaming platform of the future and has doubled its level of developer support compared to last year.
Among the current generation of consoles, it is the PlayStation 4 which gets the most love from developers. The PS4 just edges out the Microsoft’s Xbox One (28% vs. 23%), while Nintendo’s Wii U continues to be ignored by large parts of the developing community.
